Passing Through: A Devotional Prayer Guide

God’s Identity (pt. I): God Almighty

The Exodus account is a powerful story of deliverance. Before God rescued His people, the Israelites, He reassured Moses of His name: El-Shaddai (‘God Almighty,’ Exodus 6:2-3). As God delivered His people from the Egyptians, He displayed His might and power to all people. He's stronger than mighty nations and He's sovereign over the sea. He confuses and conquerors armies, and He divides the waters for His people's safe passage.

This is the greatest act of deliverance until the work of Jesus on the cross. What we read in Exodus points us, with great anticipation, to the One to come - the One who would pay the ultimate price for our spiritual deliverance. When we read the Bible, we tend to identify with the "good guys" from Israel, but truthfully, without Jesus' sacrifice on the cross we are a whole lot more like the "bad guys" in Egypt. Our hearts are unrepentant and hardened towards God - much like Pharoah's was. The good news is that because of Jesus, we do get to identify with Israel. We get to become God's people who are deeply cherished and fully delivered.

Let's realize that there is an enemy of our souls who "comes only to steal and kill and destroy," but let's not forget that Jesus came "that [we] may have life and have it to the full" (John 10:10). What do you need God to deliver you from? What areas in your life do you need to experience the power of God acting on your behalf? Whether it's a hardened heart, disobedience towards God, a difficult situation, or even the state of your mental health, remember that our God is powerful enough to deliver.

Pray: Give thanks that your help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth (Psalm 121:2). Thank Him that He can overcome what may feel daunting or impossible. Ask Him to help you in your current situation.

Passing Through: A Devotional Prayer Guide

God helped Moses and the Israelites pass through the Red Sea, He also helps us to navigate the changing seasons of our lives today. Our life of “passing through” can be challenging and tiring, but it can also be exhilarating and produce good things. Whatever you’re walking through now, be encouraged that we serve a God who walks with us to the other side.
