Et [Naomi] dit : Voici, ta belle-sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers ses dieux ; retourne-t’en après ta belle-sœur. Et Ruth dit : Ne me prie pas de te laisser, pour que je m’en retourne d’avec toi ; car où tu iras, j’irai, et où tu demeureras, je demeurerai : ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton DIEU sera mon DIEU. Là où tu mourras, je mourrai et j’y serai enterrée. Ainsi me fasse l’ÉTERNEL, et ainsi il y ajoute, si la mort [seule] ne me sépare de toi ! Et [Naomi] vit qu’elle était résolue d’aller avec elle, et elle cessa de lui parler. Et elles marchèrent les deux jusqu’à ce qu’elles arrivèrent à Bethléhem. Et il arriva que, comme elles entraient dans Bethléhem, toute la ville s’émut à leur sujet ; et les [femmes] disaient : Est-ce là Naomi ? Et elle leur dit : Ne m’appelez pas Naomi, appelez-moi Mara ; car le Tout-puissant m’a remplie d’amertume. Je m’en allai comblée, et l’ÉTERNEL me ramène à vide. Pourquoi m’appelez-vous Naomi, quand l’ÉTERNEL m’a abattue, et que le Tout-puissant m’a affligée ? Ainsi Naomi revint, et avec elle Ruth, la Moabite, sa belle-fille, qui était venue des champs de Moab ; et elles vinrent à Bethléhem, au commencement de la moisson des orges.

Noémi dit à Ruth : « Regarde, ta belle-sœur est retournée vers son peuple et vers le dieu de son peuple. Fais comme elle, rentre chez toi ! » Mais Ruth répond : « Ne me force pas à te quitter pour rentrer chez moi. Là où tu iras, j’irai. Là où tu habiteras, j’habiterai. Ton peuple sera mon peuple, et ton Dieu sera mon Dieu. Là où tu mourras, je mourrai, et là on m’enterrera. Que le SEIGNEUR me punisse très sévèrement si ce n’est pas la mort qui me sépare de toi ! » Quand Noémi voit que Ruth veut à tout prix venir avec elle, elle n’insiste plus. Les deux femmes marchent ensemble jusqu’à Bethléem. Quand elles arrivent là, tous les habitants sont surpris de les voir. Les femmes du village disent : « Est-ce que c’est Noémi ? » Mais Noémi leur répond : « Ne m’appelez pas Noémi, la femme heureuse. Appelez-moi Mara, la femme amère, car le Tout-Puissant a rendu ma vie très amère. En partant d’ici, j’avais les mains pleines. Le SEIGNEUR me fait revenir les mains vides. Il s’est tourné contre moi, le Tout-Puissant m’a fait du mal. Ne m’appelez donc plus Noémi, la femme heureuse ! » C’est de cette façon que Noémi revient du pays de Moab, avec Ruth, sa belle-fille moabite. Elles arrivent à Bethléem au moment où la récolte de l’orge commence.

Elle leur dit: Ne m'appelez pas Naomi; appelez-moi Mara car le Tout-Puissant m'a remplie d'amertume. J'étais dans l'abondance à mon départ, et l'Eternel me ramène les mains vides. Pourquoi m'appelleriez-vous Naomi, après que l'Eternel s'est prononcé contre moi, et que le Tout-Puissant m'a affligée? Ainsi revinrent du pays de Moab Naomi et sa belle-fille, Ruth la Moabite. Elles arrivèrent à Bethléhem au commencement de la moisson des orges.

Elle leur répondit : Ne m’appelez plus Noémi (L’heureuse), appelez-moi Mara (L’affligée), car le Tout-Puissant m’a beaucoup affligée. Je suis partie d’ici comblée, et l’Eternel m’y fait revenir les mains vides. Alors pourquoi m’appeler encore Noémi quand l’Eternel s’est prononcé contre moi et que le Tout-Puissant m’a plongée dans l’affliction ? C’est ainsi que Noémi et sa belle-fille, Ruth, la Moabite, revinrent des plaines de Moab. Lorsqu’elles arrivèrent à Bethléhem, c’était le début de la moisson de l’orge.

Les femmes s'exclamaient: «Est-ce vraiment Noémi?» Noémi leur déclara: «Ne m'appelez plus Noémi – “l'Heureuse” –, mais appelez-moi Mara – “l'Affligée” –, car le Dieu tout-puissant m'a durement affligée. Je suis partie d'ici les mains pleines et le Seigneur m'a fait revenir les mains vides. Ne m'appelez donc plus Noémi, puisque le Seigneur tout-puissant s'est tourné contre moi et a causé mon malheur.» C'est ainsi que Noémi revint du pays de Moab avec Ruth, sa belle-fille moabite. Lorsqu'elles arrivèrent à Bethléem, on commençait juste à récolter l'orge.
