Remets ces choses en mémoire, protestant devant le Seigneur qu’on n’ait pas de disputes de mots, [ce qui est] sans aucun profit, [et] pour la subversion des auditeurs. Étudie-toi à te présenter approuvé à DIEU, ouvrier qui n’a pas à avoir honte, exposant justement la parole de la vérité ; mais évite les discours vains et profanes, car [ceux qui s’y livrent] iront plus avant dans l’impiété, et leur parole rongera comme une gangrène, desquels sont Hyménée et Philète qui se sont écartés de la vérité, disant que la résurrection a déjà eu lieu, et qui renversent la foi de quelques-uns.

Rappelle cela à tous. Devant Dieu, demande-leur avec force de ne pas se battre sur les mots. Cela ne sert à rien, sauf à démolir ceux qui écoutent. Tâche de te présenter à Dieu comme un homme solide, un ouvrier qui peut être content de son travail et qui annonce correctement la vraie Parole de Dieu. Évite les discours creux et contraires à la foi. Oui, ceux qui les font s’éloigneront de Dieu de plus en plus. Leurs discours seront comme une plaie infectée qui s’élargit. Parmi ces gens-là, il y a Himéné et Philète. Ils se sont éloignés de la vérité. Ils disent que Dieu nous a déjà relevés de la mort et ainsi, ils renversent la foi de certains.
