Sleepless

In the middle of the night

"You need to put everything that's on your mind away into mental drawers while you're lying in bed. That helps." My friend gave me this tip when I told him about my sleepless nights.

I tried it, but my drawers quickly turned into huge closets with so many drawers that I lost track—even mentally. I worried about every detail of the past day, but I also worried about all the next day's "to-do's," not to mention all the bills that still needed to be paid.

Do you know the verse "'Don't worry about tomorrow. It will take care of itself. You have enough to worry about today.'" (Matthew 6:34, CEV)?

Since my childhood, my mother has always mentioned this verse a lot. But it wasn't until I was much older that I noticed my focus was wrong when considering this verse. Instead of dwelling on Jesus saying that "tomorrow will take care of itself" (meaning He has already promised His help ahead of time!), I was always stuck thinking, "It seems I'll always have worries then!"

I've discovered something: in order to get out of the chaos of thoughts that robs us of sleep at night, we actually need to check our perspective first. How do you see this verse? How do you see your God?

Hasn't He already gotten you out of every mess in the past? Then don't you believe that He'll do it again today and tomorrow? Yes, God promises to carry you day after day, so you can sleep soundly night after night!

This is the first, very important key to regaining your sleep: check your perspective! Because yes, it is a matter of perspective. Do you see only the worries in this verse, like I did then? Or do you see that God wants to help you anew each day?

I encourage you to memorize this verse…with the right perspective!…and recite it to yourself again and again, especially when you go to bed at night.

I pray peace over you from the bottom of my heart!

You are a miracle!

Are you familiar with sleepless nights? When you can count sheep all you want, but nothing happens? I've been there many times, both when I was struggling with depression and afterward. I'd like to share my experiences and thoughts with you in this upcoming series.
