For those of us who find conflict to be our absolute worst nightmare, this verse feels like an easy one to follow. We’d rather do just about anything than choose unwholesome talk because that unwholesome talk could lead to conflict. And conflict? Well, that’s something we want to avoid at all costs. But, as we all know, conflict is an unavoidable part of this life. That’s why we have to take our tip from the second portion of this verse. Because not all conflict has to include unwholesome talk. In fact, conflict done well—conflict done with good communication and the right words—can actually be one of the best things for our relationships.
As Paul instructed us here, we can handle conflict well by choosing words that build others up. It may sound impossible, but with God, all things are possible, even in conflict! It’s possible to communicate well. It’s possible to choose our words wisely. It’s possible to see a positive outcome from a showdown when we approach it with the intention to build up rather than tear down. This week, try that! Start with yourself! Choose to handle conflict well by choosing your words wisely. Go into your showdowns with a heart to build the relationship up and let your words be motivated by that!
