Build the Plane as You Fly

The year my mom was undergoing treatments for breast cancer, I was navigating a calling God had put on my heart to serve cancer patients. As I was praying through what the ministry would do and how we would best serve people, my grandparents were sharing my ideas with their pastor. He offered to help me throw a launch event where people could come celebrate what God was doing and get involved.

I went to lunch with the pastor and his wife so we could talk about what this might look like. They both smiled as they listened to me describe all the not-so-perfectly put together thoughts I had about what God had placed in my heart.

Then the pastor looked at me and said, “Rebecca, you don’t have to have it all figured out. Don’t be afraid to build the plane as you fly.”

Sometimes we feel we have to get everything right, as if it’s all or nothing. Or we think that knowing all the answers will make our fears vanish. But that’s not God’s call.

Plan. Pray. Seek. And then don’t be afraid to take steps forward as God guides and directs you.

God imparts His wisdom for each season He’s placed us in. If we knew beyond that, our journey wouldn’t require faith that God “is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us” (Ephesians 3:20). As we read in Psalm 119: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Sometimes we only have light for one step at a time—but isn’t that enough to keep going?

As you take the next step, remember that your glory goal won’t make sense to everyone. But it doesn’t matter what other people think. It doesn’t matter what they say. All that will matter in heaven is this: When the King of the Universe put this glory goal on your heart, were you obedient?

I would rather be pleasing in the eyes of God than be a success by the world’s standards and miss the mark when it comes to all God has in store for my life. Wouldn’t you?

What “glory goal” came to your mind and heart as you read this week’s devotional? What next step will you take toward that goal?

Do the Thing

Do you have a “thing” you feel called to pursue, but you feel too overwhelmed or scared to start? Rebecca George reminds us that as we see ourselves through the truth of God’s Word, we can move toward His calling with confidence. As we do, we’ll find that God gives us the goals, gumption, and grace we need to become the go-getter girls He created us to be.
