Christmas trees are kind of a big deal this time of year, even if your tree itself isn’t all that big. 77% of Americans will celebrate with a Christmas tree. And while most people have no idea why we kill a tree, put it inside our house, hang dangerous glass ornaments on it, and flammable socks near the fireplace, the Christmas tree can be a good reminder of God’s presence.

The Christmas tree is evergreen. While most trees lose their leaves in the winter, evergreens keep their color year round. They are forever green, which is a perfect picture of God’s love and faithfulness. While the seasons change, he stays the same.

He is our everlasting father. Even when we feel orphaned, abandoned, forgotten, or we have been the worst kids ever, he is steadfast. Even if we’ve been on the naughty list and received coal a few years in a row, God has no desire to cast us off. In fact, he chose a different tree to show us just how much he loves us. Christmas is “Christ’s mass,” a reminder of just how sacrificial God’s love is for us.

When you have the chance to spend a few minutes near a Christmas tree, let it remind you of just how much the Everlasting Father loves you.

The Adventures of Christmas

The true intention behind Advent was a way of preparing one’s heart for Christmas. It was a way to create a posture like Simeon: “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him” (Luke 2:25). This devotional by Dan Stanford is designed to help us do that.
