Lessons for the ClimbEsimerkki
People have been singing to rally their spirits and unite on the journey for generations. In the military, soldiers sing marching songs. On road trips, family and friends sing silly songs. For the Jewish people, it was the Psalms. The Songs of Ascent are a group of 15 songs, found in Psalms 120-134. It’s like an epic road trip playlist, a list of climbing songs: songs the people of Israel would sing as they journeyed to Jerusalem for celebrations, sacrifices, and worship. Through these songs, they would come to terms with their humanity - their pains and fears. They would remember God, and the songs would heal their hearts and remind them of God’s faithfulness.
These songs still serve a purpose today. They remind us of the emotions felt by the people of Israel - their cries to God in the middle of their journey, their desperation to hear God and to be rescued by Him, and their remembrance of how He always comes through and assurance of how He will continue to come through in the midst of their circumstances.
