Hope 4 Today: Staying Connected To God In A Distracted Culture

DAY 2 OF 8

Adopted and Free

When I work with college internship students, I teach them about the need to have a servant spirit and do whatever is asked—to sit down, keep their mouths shut, and observe the culture of the office. The students pay attention to this advice so well that they can humble themselves too much and seem insecure and unambitious. Fear keeps them from asking questions and expressing what they’d like to learn. Employers tell me that it’s not until the last workday of the internship that the students finally speak up. While the interns were adopted into the company, fear kept them enslaved and unable to fully take advantage of an opportunity to flourish.

God has adopted us as children of His kingdom. He wants us to ask Him questions and to be free to express ourselves to Him. Yes, we’re committed to Him and want to serve Him fully, but He wants us to be knowledgeable, capable, and fearless—and yes, even argue with Him. He wants to mentor us, not make us robots.

Which of your deep desires are you holding back from your Father? Break your servant chains and express yourself.
