The 5 R’s: Lessons We Value From Educators Beyond The Classroom

DAY 1 OF 5

The Value of Routine

Training goes deeper than teaching—it becomes a lifestyle, a routine, a habit. Proverb 22:6 assures us that if we train up a child in the Word and ways of God, those things will be engrained in their life. The verse does not promise that they won’t try to run from their training but, once entrenched in their hearts and minds, what they’ve learned cannot be erased; in other words, they will not depart from their godly training. Repeated thoughts and actions build patterns in our brains that become almost automatic. Think about the patterns in your life. What do you do every day or in the same way time and time again?

Think back to the teachers who had specific practices you followed as you entered their classroom. Did you have a teacher that expected you to place homework on their desk before you sat down at yours? A set schedule in elementary school that insured you knew what was coming next? How did you feel on days of unexpected change?

God has given us all the time we need to do His will. His priorities should be a valued part of our daily routine. When you build good habits through a routine such as having time to pray and read the Bible every day, you really do not use or lose time deciding whether or not you are going to do it. Routine helps us not to forget essential steps in our schedule and relieves us from undue stress. Routine gives us order and helps us to operate in extraordinary opportunities and thrive under extreme expectations or circumstances.

If you feel like your schedule runs you instead of you running your schedule, take time to revisit the value of routine. Set up daily regimens that help you to remember and accomplish the most important parts of your life and day, and stick to your routine until it becomes… well, routine.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you for educators who showed me the value of having a routine. Thank you for being a God of order and for the great plans you have for my life. I do not want to miss a minute or an opportunity. Help me to measure and manage my days to make them count for You.

About this Plan

The 5 R’s: Lessons We Value From Educators Beyond The Classroom

Educators taught you so much more than the 3 R’s of reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic.  The values at the core of your character may reflect the lessons you learned from educators—teachers, coaches, mentors, and parents—who were rooted in God’s Word. In this five-day devotional, join Kathy Branzell, author of An Apple a Day , and revisit the 5 R’s we learned from some of our favorite educators that added value to our lives well beyond our school years.
