Abusing the World

The world of technology is captivating—especially the world of virtual reality. Social media always gives us something to press, swipe, share or scroll to, which keep us continually locked in. Neck bent, eyes focused, screen in the face is the preferred posture of our generation. It's hard to let go. But I highly doubt that the reason we struggle to unplug from these devices is because they are too amazing. Maybe the reason we can't part from our devices is not because they are so great, but because we are so…not. Many times our hot pursuit of the newest item is just the going after of a better distraction to keep us from our bored unsatisfied selves.

Virtual reality, especially social networks, create an experience that allows us to escape from our real lives. So reality, such as lunch with friends, becomes less impressive, and we can't live without constantly checking its virtual version. One blogger put it like this:

Virtual reality is a great "supplement" to reality, but many of us treat it as a "substitute" for reality. What's on your little "machine" is a copy of life. It cannot become your life. This shows up in my life when I find I'm not redeeming the time, but using my phone to "kill time." God would have me make great use of the moment, so why would I rather spend it aimlessly scrolling?

Although the American way is to go bigger, better, and faster. And we demand MORE, MORE, and MORE! If we are indulging in something that does not satisfy, then the answer is not to consume more, but switch dishes! There are not enough YouTube videos, Facebook updates, or inspiring quotes in the world to replace fellowship with God, His people, and His word.

Robert Murray McCheyne, a Scottish pastor in the 1800s, said, "If you are ever so much taken up with any enjoyment that it takes away your love for prayer or for your bible, you are abusing this world.” (I would add to that: your love for genuine relationships) All those things can be good, but never let them distract or replace what is great: fellowship with Jesus and His people. Make a habit of unplugging from the matrix, getting alone with God, and engaging with the real world around you. God actually satisfies. He doesn't distract.
