The Legacy Journey

DAY 9 OF 31

Safety in Counsel

Back when I started selling houses, I realized I had a big problem. I know it’s hard to believe, but I talked way too much. I would just bombard clients with details about features, contracts, neighborhood stats and all kinds of stuff. And more times than I’d like to admit, I talked myself right out of a sale.

Eventually, I figured out how to listen better. I also learned how to stop complicating the process with a flood of useless words.

Investing can get like that. When “experts” start talking about options and tricks and strategies, your eyes can glaze over. As a result, you either give up completely or sign whatever an advisor sets in front of you—neither of which is a wise course of action.

The truth is that most people who build wealth keep things amazingly simple. In fact, you should never invest in anything you don’t understand, and you shouldn’t buy anything you can’t explain to someone else.

That’s where applying the truth of Proverbs 11:14 to your financial planning comes in handy. Wise counselors sit down with you and help you understand what you need to know and why. They also help you avoid making decisions you’ll end up regretting down the road.

Now, I’m not talking about people who talk down to you or make you feel dumb. I’m not talking about someone who wants to intimidate you. Those folks are out there, and they only need to hear two words from you: “You’re fired!”

Instead, you need a wise counselor who has the heart of a teacher. A financial advisor is a really important member of your team, so find one who will explain everything and guide you toward the best decisions possible.

Your legacy is at stake. Rely on counselors who will keep you on the right path.
