EquipHer Vol. 10: "How to Overcome Distractions"Sample
Day 1: When We Lose Sight of the Goal
Have you ever started the day with clear goals and intentions, only to find yourself overwhelmed by notifications, social media scrolling, and miscellaneous tasks that pull you away from your original mission? Distractions are everywhere and quietly steer us off course—not just from our tasks, but also from our relationship with God.
In Luke 10:38-42, we find the story of Martha and Mary, a narrative that speaks powerfully to our modern struggles. Martha, consumed by the busyness of preparations, seemed convinced that everything depended on her. She was likely trying to do the right thing, but while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to Him, Scripture describes Martha as being distracted: “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.”
This scene can easily be a mirror reflection of our own life. Days filled with “urgent” matters vying for our attention, and similar to Martha, we can become trapped in endless doing, forgetting the importance of our personal calling. Mary’s choice invites us to pause and listen, to align our hearts with God rather than just our hands with tasks. It’s not about neglecting responsibilities but prioritizing God first, allowing Him to guide our actions, time, and energy throughout the course of our days.
It is important to remember that time is something we can not get back, and therefore, we are called to make meaningful choices with our time. Psalm 46:10 gently yet firmly reminds us: “Be still, and know that I am God.” The stillness found in God’s presence allows us to align our priorities with His, transforming a few quiet minutes into an opportunity to reconnect with what truly matters.
In the days ahead, we’ll explore four practical, biblical ways to handle distractions. Today, we invite you to take the first step: recognize how distractions impact your life and choose to shift your focus toward what God is calling you to do.
Reflective Questions
- What distractions in your life cause you to lose sight of your primary goals?
- What is one step you can take today to remove that distraction?
Prayer: Lord, in a world full of distractions, teach me to pause and recognize Your presence. Help me identify what pulls me away from You and choose each day what truly matters. Grant me peace and focus to follow Your path faithfully. Amen.
