Biblical Leadership Series: Lead Like Nehemiah

DAY 4 OF 5

Standing Up for Justice and Integrity

In Nehemiah 5, we see a powerful example of leadership rooted in justice, integrity, and compassion. As Nehemiah continued the work of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, a new challenge emerged—not from external enemies, but from within the community itself. The people were facing severe economic hardships. Some of the wealthier Jews had been exploiting the poor, charging high interest rates on loans, and even forcing them into slavery to repay debts. This internal injustice threatened to undermine the unity and purpose of the work.

When Nehemiah heard about this oppression, he didn’t ignore it or wait for it to resolve on its own. Instead, he acted boldly and confronted the injustice head-on. In Nehemiah 5:6-7 (NIV), he says, “When I heard their outcry and these charges, I was very angry. I pondered them in my mind and then accused the nobles and officials. I told them, ‘You are charging your own people interest!’” Nehemiah’s righteous anger was not driven by personal offense but by his desire for justice. He cared deeply about the welfare of the people and the integrity of the work they were doing together.

Nehemiah not only addressed the problem but also offered a solution. He commanded the leaders to stop charging interest and to return the land, houses, and money they had unjustly taken from the people. The leaders agreed to follow his instructions, and Nehemiah held them accountable, demonstrating that justice was a priority for him as a leader.

This chapter teaches us that leadership requires more than just managing tasks or overseeing projects—it also involves standing up for what is right and ensuring that others are treated with fairness and respect. Nehemiah’s willingness to confront wrongdoing, even when it came from his own people, shows us the importance of integrity and accountability in leadership.

As we reflect on Nehemiah’s actions, we’re reminded that true leadership doesn’t turn a blind eye to injustice. It seeks to bring restoration and healing, even when it’s difficult.

Reflective Questions:

  • How do you respond when you see injustice or unfair treatment in your community or workplace?
  • What can Nehemiah’s example teach you about standing up for what is right, even when it’s uncomfortable?
  • How can you ensure your leadership is rooted in integrity and justice, both in your personal life and in your influence over others?

Prayer:
Lord, please give me the courage to stand up for justice and integrity like Nehemiah did. Help me to be bold in confronting wrongs and compassionate in offering solutions. May my leadership reflect Your heart for fairness and righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

About this Plan

Biblical Leadership Series: Lead Like Nehemiah

The book of Nehemiah shows us how the Lord can impact a nation through the prayers, perseverance and spiritual grit of one leader whose heart is aligned with God’s. The Prophet Nehemiah modeled for us the characteristics of a Godly leader, successfully leading the people in the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a man of prayer, vision, perseverance, strategy, and courage. Let's take a look at what the Lord wants us to glean from the leadership of Nehemiah in this plan by Evangelist April Snell.
