How Do I Fast?
There are many kinds of fasts portrayed throughout the Bible. Some of the most common fasts are complete fasts (water only), partial fasts (not eating or drinking certain things), and absolute fasts (no water or food).
What we read about in Exodus 34 is an absolute fast, and while this is the most intense fast there is, I chose these verses for a reason. Exodus 34 clearly states that Moses “ate no bread and drank no water” (v. 28). When Moses fasted, he omitted something from his diet that would typically be there. This type of fast is severe (and is only seen in the Bible on rare occasions when God called someone specifically to do this). No fast should ever be done without consulting your doctor first. However, I chose these verses because they clarified that Moses gave something up when he fasted.
If you’re wondering how to fast, many resources are available online. However, knowing that God is calling you to fast for a particular reason and season is most important. I would encourage you to begin by praying about these things:
- What should I fast? This could be food, media, an addiction, etc., that you’re deciding to say “no” to.
- How long should I fast? Set a timeline for how long you want to fast.
- What will replace my time? Fasting is about saying “no” and “yes.” We say “no” to things we need to give up, and we say “yes” to things we need to add to our lives. Whatever you decide to fast, decide now what you will spend that time doing (praying, reading your Bible, etc.).
By following these Prayer points, you can start praying and fasting.
