Prayer: The God Who Does Infinitely More

Imagine that someone was to take stock of all the prayers that you had prayed over the past twelve months. As they collate your prayers and begin to sift through them, they start to notice patterns about what you’re most prone to praying for — the things that truly capture your heart and mind. The things that ultimately you believe are worth praying for and that God can answer.

What kind of prayer life would this person find? What would they say are the deepest aches and most pressing matters that you bring before God in prayer? Would they find that you believe in a God who holds the universe in his hands and can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine, or in a God who is reasonable and only able to handle small requests?

It’s a confronting thought, isn’t it?

Here is the reality: our prayer life reveals what we truly believe about God. And if we’re honest, at times our prayers are reflective of our belief in a small God who does exactly what we can ask and imagine he can do — rather than a God who can and longs to do more than we could ever conceive of.

In their book, The Power of Moments, Chip and Dan Heath encourage their readers to “beware the soul-sucking force of reasonableness” when it comes to making the most of significant moments in life.

In much the same way, the Apostle Paul is urging us in Ephesians 3 to beware the soul-sucking force of reasonableness when it comes to our prayer lives.

We have a God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, and our prayers ought to reflect that. If we want to set the sail in order to catch the wind of revival, we need to fight the voice of reasonableness by praying prayers that reflect the power, glory and might of the God we pray to. Where in your life can your prayers become more reflective of the God you believe in?
