TheLionWithin.Us: 5 Simple Strategies to Fight for Your Family

DAY 3 OF 5

Strategy 3: Intentional Bedtime Conversations

The rat race of life can leave families on the brink of exhaustion every day.

An often underutilized tool to fight for connection with the ones you love shows up at the end of the day. I remember fondly my mother and her relentless bedtime routine with me and my brother. We would have our teeth brushed and pray before we went to sleep. It left a meaningful impression on my life and I fully recognize now the potential battlefield that exists at the bedside of our family members.

The current reality for many, however, looks far from this. It appears that the evil one, in his devious scheme to disrupt families and cause division, has attacked the bedtime routine with the weapon of busyness. Families have such demanding calendars and the reality is that many are often running full tilt with little margin.

Many families run from event to event, with logistical challenges that could baffle some of the greatest algorithms at FedEx and UPS. As more and more piles on the plate, the level of importance regarding having true conversations at bedtime goes out the window. Upon reflection, it seems that when running at the redline of life you risk the chance of completely missing the blessing of growth as a family unit that God has in store.

Another possibility for missing the opportunity to engage in meaningful connection at bedtime is fear. Whether it is fear that conversations are going to get uncomfortable or even worse fear that true connection is out of reach due to the neglect in nurturing the relationship over the years. While both may have merit, they are not passed to forgo taking action.

The reality is it is never too late to right a wrong, especially when done out of the pure motive of love. Your family will recognize, although not at first when you are making an effort. It takes vulnerability, transparency, and authenticity but when done correctly, the bedtime routine can provide some of the most meaningful connections and memories for your family.

Bedtime is a powerful opportunity to speak life into your family. This is a time to bless your children, speak words of encouragement, or pray with your spouse. Don’t miss this chance to end the day by reminding them of God's love and faithfulness. The evil one wants us to rush through bedtime, but let’s use it as a moment to sow peace and security.

Questions to Consider:

  1. What fears might be holding you back from engaging in deeper, more vulnerable conversations with your children or spouse at bedtime?
  2. How might creating a consistent bedtime ritual of blessing and connection help instill a sense of security and love in your family, especially for your children?
