How to Keep a Peaceful Conscience?

DAY 1 OF 6

“… Let us draw near to God… cleanse our hearts from a guilty conscience…” Hebrews 10:22 (GNT).

One thing is to have peace with God, and another is to have peace with ourselves. Whoever is not at peace with God cannot be at peace with their own conscience. And there is no worse torment than a disturbed conscience. Just as the splendid robe of a king does not soothe the pain of a sick body, nothing in this world can bring joy to a befuddled and disturbed conscience. When Moses told the Israelites that God would bring them out of Egypt, they "did not listen… because they were too discouraged…” Exodus 6:9 (NLT). Hannah went up every year to Shiloh to participate in the celebration at the Lord's Tabernacle, but “she wept and would not eat” 1 Samuel 1:7. She could not enjoy it because her heart was grieved, 1 Samuel 1:8. This happens many times. We attend services, we hear the Word of God, and we declare His beautiful promises, but we cannot receive the life that is offered to us because our hearts are troubled, distressed, and disheartened. In other words, we have no peace!

If you want to experience peace, you must first be at peace with God. Be careful not to try to heal your conscience with anything other than the refreshing oil of Christ! Jesus said: “In me, you will find peace” John 16:33 (TPT). And He also said: “I leave you a gift: peace of mind and heart…” John 14:27 (NLT). The apostle Paul said: “We have peace… through our Lord Jesus Christ”, Romans 5:1 (NIV); Ephesians 2:14.
