Adulting

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6: Purpose in the Unknown

One of the most challenging aspects of adulthood is finding purpose amidst the everyday tasks and responsibilities that can often feel mundane. It's easy to get lost in the routine and overlook the significance of what we do daily. We find ourselves questioning our purpose in life. As we seek purpose, we wrestle with the unknown. That’s because adulting often brings a lot of uncertainty. Decisions about the future can cause uncertainty, and facing the unknown can be daunting. The unknown adds another layer of complexity because it can be intimidating and cause us to feel anxious or afraid.

How can you even begin to discover your purpose when adulting brings so much uncertainty to your life?

As I entered my early 30s, I faced a period of adulting filled with intense challenges that brought on significant stress and anxiety. I didn’t know whether I was coming or going. Nothing seemed right. I got very little sleep, and I had even less peace. My responsibilities felt overwhelming, and I struggled to see the bigger picture. My life seemed like a series of mundane tasks, each day blending into the next with no clear sense of direction or fulfillment. The weight of adult responsibilities pushed me to a breaking point, leaving me exhausted and questioning the purpose of it all.

In the midst of this turmoil, I turned to prayer and fasting, seeking God's guidance more earnestly than ever before. It was during this period of deep reflection and spiritual hunger that God began to reveal glimpses of purpose in my life. Despite the overwhelming nature of adulting and the uncertainties that came with it, I started to see how He was working through every single aspect of my life.

One day, while still navigating a series of issues, I noticed that the things I once saw as burdens—like managing a tight budget, balancing work stress, trying to have a personal life, and making difficult decisions —were being transformed into opportunities for growth and service. What felt like annoyances began to reveal itself as part of a larger, meaningful journey. Through consistent prayer and worship, I realized that each responsibility I undertook was contributing to a greater purpose, aligning me more closely with His will.

Each day the Lord began to reveal His purpose little by little. Once I realized what He was doing, I decided to relinquish the desire to control the outcomes of my life, accept the challenges of an opportunity to draw closer to Him, and come into alignment with His divine plan. The joy of the Lord became real. And since, my purpose in Christ has become clearer and clearer.

God’s reassurance during these uncertain times showed me that even the smallest tasks or most painful experiences could bring forth acts of worship when viewed through a heart of gratitude and trust. By embracing the uncertainty with faith, I began to see that God was using every aspect of my life to shape me and ultimately further His kingdom. The burdens of adulting became less daunting as I understood that they were part of His perfect plan.

Today, let’s choose to trust God with the unknown. Let’s surrender our fears and anxieties to Him, knowing that He is working all things for our good according to His purpose for our lives. By finding purpose in the mundane and in the uncertain, we align ourselves with God’s greater plan and discover a deeper sense of fulfillment.

Reflection:

  1. Where are you struggling to trust God with the unknown in your life?
  2. How can you invite God into the uncertainties that bring you fear or anxiety?
  3. What would it look like for you to surrender control and rely on God's guidance in these unknown areas?

Affirmations:

  1. I trust God with the unknown, knowing that my faith in Him will guide me.
  2. I trust that my unique purpose will be revealed to me by God in His perfect timing.
  3. I believe His plans for me are good, and I walk in faith toward His purpose.

About this Plan

Adulting

In this devotional, we will explore adulting - a colloquial term that emerged in recent years to describe the process of behaving like a responsible adult. Though the term is used with adulthood feeling hard, adulting can become less of a burden and more of a blessing when viewed through the lens of faith. We’ll look at how God can use our everyday responsibilities throughout adulthood to mature us, refine us, and draw us closer to Him.
