DAY 2 OF 7

Celebrate God’s Gifts

We serve a heavenly Father who is an extravagant and intentional gift-giver. He gives gifts on purpose and has not ignored one of us when it comes to the giving of extraordinary gifts.

There are many gifts listed in Scripture; each of these biblical gifts was given to ensure that the children of God would live an abundant life. Can you identify a gift the Lord has given to you?

I have always wondered if the generous and infinite heavenly Father had more gifts to give than just those listed in the Bible. Certainly, the ones referenced in Scripture are the most vital and prioritized gifts, but as I ponder the broad character of God, I wonder if He has other gifts up His heavenly sleeve. Perhaps these other gifts could be listed under the categories of talents or even personality preferences, but they are gifts nonetheless.

I have quietly yet perpetually contemplated if celebration was one of my assigned gifts. Although everyone who knows me would never ascribe the phrase party girl to my persona, I do have a knack for celebrating ordinary days in rare and memorable style. I have found that this penchant for celebration has become a habitual lifestyle and is a captivating aspect of who I am to my core.

  • On March 17, I serve green mashed potatoes to my family.
  • On April Fool’s Day, we have spaghetti for breakfast and pancakes for dinner.
  • March Madness is a holiday complete with trophies, T-shirts, and the giving of gifts.
  • October 1 is the first official day of Christmas music season.
  • My Thanksgiving celebration is not just a day, but it is a way of life.
  • I consider it to be a good day if I have laughed, forgiven, and smiled.

What are some of the ways in which you celebrate an ordinary day?

My mother once read us a list of things she loves, including hot baths, two-year-olds, houses on hills, yellow daffodils, blue skies, and old ladies.

My mom is a licensed expert on how to celebrate an ordinary day.

I want to be just like her.

Meaningful Moment

Make a list of the things you love like my mother did. Share it with someone today.

Daily Declaration

“I declare that from this day forward, I will wring the joy out of an ordinary day.”

About this Plan

Today Is a Verb: Open the Gift of Now

Sometimes, days seem to pass by with little importance; at other times, we might feel overwhelmed by our experiences. But what if we intentionally view each today as a gift from God? What if we considered today as a verb, an action that we can use right now? Carol McLeod asks us to grab hold of God’s endless gift of time and make the most of every moment.
