Principles of hope from the jailer

Several principles arise from the story of the Philippian jailer related to the power of the Gospel for parents and children, the potential of good news in times of crises, the power of living out our faith in the presence of our families, and basic citizenship rights afforded to parents and children.

1. Gospel power for families. The power of the Gospel can change a man at any age and a family at any stage of its existence. The Gospel that comes to parents should also flow through them to the rest of their household.

2. Good news in crises. Fathers and mothers often bear many burdens and are looking for hope of a better life. If we listen and are attentive to the needs of struggling parents, we will hear their concerns and know how to respond with a ready answer for the reason of our hope in Christ.

3. Transformed living. The strongest proclamation of the Gospel comes through the demonstration of living impacted by the presence of Jesus in a parent’s life.

4. Family rights. Families shouldn’t shrink back from insisting on basic rights afforded to them by the government.
