How to Maintain Focus in a Distracted WorldSample
When distractions come and you feel like you can’t stay focused, it’s important to identify what is causing the interruptions. At times, it might be lack of sleep or a busy schedule that leads to making poor decisions. Often, distractions are only part of the problem. Being prepared and aware of the challenges and temptations in life can help.
The author Clay Scroggins has noted how we have to fight hard against distractions because they work. They are effective. There’s an allure to the world -- to social media, to television, and to food. Psalm 35:13 talks about how we humble our souls with fasting. Philippians 4:6-7 says: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
The battle is real, but it belongs to the Lord. What does that mean when it comes to feeling distracted? Turn to the Lord. Fight the battle of distraction but focusing on your Savior. This can involve fasting and prayer, it can also involve enjoying your time with Jesus. What you focus on determines your success. When you focus on prayer and fasting, when you turn away from worldly things, you will find there is a renewed vibrancy that comes from the Holy Spirit working in you. Your plans will succeed, as it says in Psalm 20:4, because God brings the success.
That might require defining what success even means. God is waiting for us to turn our focus on him instead of the distractions of the world. He is a moment away. Will you set aside the pursuits of work and ambition, the social media feed that seems so important, and truly and deeply become enraptured in the joyful discovery of the Savior? That is real success.
About this Plan
The world is full of distractions. Our phones, television, the web. The best way to deal with distraction is not just to restrict what you do, but rather to focus on what matters the most.
