Genealogies—long lists of names that can seem tedious—hold a significant place in the Bible, particularly in the Gospel of Matthew. This Gospel begins with a genealogy, not with a dramatic miracle or an epic parable. Why? Because this seemingly dry list of names is a rich tapestry woven with threads of promise, faithfulness, and divine purpose.

Matthew, a former tax collector transformed by Jesus, wrote his Gospel for a Jewish audience. By beginning with a genealogy, Matthew links Jesus to Abraham and David, establishing His roots in Jewish heritage. This lineage is more than a family tree; it’s a bridge from the promises of the Old Testament to their fulfillment in Christ.
