In God’s good design for a thriving nation, the family stands as the most basic, most important, and most sacred level of government. Healthy families produce healthy cultures.

This is why the importance of the fifth commandment cannot be overstated. The weight it carries very literally determines the difference between a life of blessing or living under a curse—for both individuals and nations. Those who hear and heed the fifth commandment’s exhortation receive the promise that is tied to it.

That promise? Enjoying a long, good life in the land given to them by their benevolent God.

Sadly, in this day, broken homes are a pandemic. Fatherlessness—and the countless social ills it fosters—is devastating whole swaths of our population. Our cities are filled with violence, lawlessness, and chaos. What few people understand is that there is a direct correlation between the decay of our wonderful nation and the collapse of the family unit.

But God knows the power of fatherhood because He is, Himself, a good Father.

Thus, it is no surprise that God, in writing His prescription for a good life and a healthy society, included a commandment related to parenting and children. God gave us the Ten Commandments so that we could live well and have life more abundantly. The truth is that God, as a good Father, always has our best interests at heart. To honor His Word and His ways is to walk on the path of life. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10, ESV). Abundant life is found in following God!

“Honor your father and your mother” is a clear command straight from the Word of God. Why should children obey? Because God said it's right. Any opinion to the contrary is, by definition, wrong. The “Let children do their own thing” advice from the secular humanists is wrong. The “Don’t impose your restrictive values on your kids” dogma of the progressives is wrong. The “Sue your parents if you think you’re a girl in a boy’s body” activists are wrong. They’re all doling out prescriptions for disaster.

Submit to God and honor your parents. Why? Because they know more than you do, and their knowledge will save your life if you listen.
