Light Is Life
What do I mean by “a gospel vision”? I want you as a Black woman to know that there is good news from God for your life, despite what the world is trying to get you to focus on.
My sister, putting your faith in Jesus makes everything about your life better, as you now are set apart for His kingdom purposes and are the recipient of His kingdom promises and privileges. Because the gospel doesn’t just save us—it changes everything about us.
A gospel vision for Black women guarantees that you will have the resources of heaven for a blessed, joyous, content, anointed, and sacrificial life. A life that remains faithful despite the suffering and challenges that will undoubtedly come.
A gospel vision says, “Don’t give up, because Jesus already did the heavy lifting on the cross,” and “Don’t see yourself as less than, because you are a daughter of the King.”
A gospel vision says, “Don’t be afraid to be strong as you serve the Lord in every area of life, because it’s his energy that empowers you” (Colossians 1:29), and “Don’t be afraid to be weak, because in your weakness his strength is made perfect” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
I believe there are three areas we can focus on when we are looking to live with gospel vision: light, lens, and love.
Let’s look first at light. In Scripture, light is associated with life. When speaking of Jesus, John said, “In him was life, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it” (John 1:4–5). Salvation is essential for what God wants to show us. Apart from salvation, which comes only through faith in Christ, we are in a state of spiritual blindness (Colossians 1:15-16). Being saved from our sins by the work of Jesus on the cross and his resurrection is how we see things from God’s perspective.
Light is essential for our ability to see anything, including God’s vision for us as women. You may not know every detail of that vision right now, but you can trust that God has a plan for you. It’s a good plan. It’s a good gospel vision.
What does the world want you to focus on? How does having a relationship with Christ help you see God’s vision for your life more clearly?
About this Plan
God made, loves and commissions you as a Black woman. He wants to show you how to root your identity in Him, see His purpose for you, and find real rest. In this week’s devotional, Dr. Sarita Lyons explores what it looks like to flourish in Christ as the Black women God made us to be.
