Doing Money God's Way

DAY 3 OF 7

The Blessing of Saving

Saving money is undoubtedly painful, but it certainly beats the pain of living paycheck to paycheck.

That's why developing the discipline of budgeting is so critical. Saving and planning is not about hoarding wealth but about being prudent and preparing for unforeseen circumstances.

A powerful biblical example is the story of Joseph in Genesis 41:34-36. God gave Joseph the wisdom to store grain during seven years of abundance to prepare for seven years of famine that God showed him were coming. This act of saving not only preserved Egypt but also many other nations. Joseph’s trust in God and prudent management of resources highlight the importance of saving to ensure stability and provision in times of scarcity.

In today's world, saving is crucial for handling emergencies, planning for future needs, and avoiding unnecessary debt. It allows us to be prepared for unexpected expenses, such as medical bills, car repairs, or job loss, and to support ourselves and others during difficult times. However, it is essential to balance saving with generosity, ensuring that we are not placing our trust in our savings but in God.

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a cautionary tale about the limits of saving. Scrooge's extreme frugality and miserly behavior lead to a joyless and lonely existence. He finds true happiness and fulfillment only when he learns to balance his wealth with generosity and kindness.

This story reminds us that while saving is important, it should not come at the expense of living a meaningful and compassionate life.

Reflect on your current saving habits. Are you preparing for the future wisely? Consider if your savings are helping you feel secure and prepared or if they are causing you to miss out on opportunities to be generous and kind. Ask God for guidance on how to manage your resources so that you can save appropriately while remaining generous. Seek a balance where your savings can provide security and enable you to help others, reflecting the biblical principles of wisdom and generosity.

Prayer: Father, give me the wisdom to save and prepare for the future. Help me to be diligent and prudent in managing the resources You have given me. May my savings be a tool for good and not a source of misplaced trust. Amen.

Reflection: How can you improve your saving habits to better prepare for the future while maintaining a spirit of generosity?
