Scared Of The Unknown

DAY 2 OF 5

By Dave Adamson

Fear and anxiety can make you feel like you’re in a fog. Some of the heroes of the Bible, like Abraham and Moses, faced times like this. There’s a Hebrew word that described the faith they had in these moments. The word is hineni, which literally means, "Here I am." Hineni is the way Abraham and Moses declared to God that they were present and ready to be used by him, even when they struggled with anxiety. For Abraham, he often doubted God’s promises, but he still said, "Here I am." Moses had anxiety about people questioning him, his ability to speak, and about his qualifications to lead, but he still said, "Here I am."

Hineni is Abraham following God despite being asked to sacrifice his son. Hineni is a trembling Moses standing in front of a burning bush and being told to face his biggest fears. Hineni is how you tell God that you are ready to do whatever he asks in whatever situation he has placed you.

Are you struggling with anxiety today? Do you feel like your next step is uncertain? Are you unsure of the future? This is when God asks you to declare hineni—that you’re here and ready to follow him no matter what! Sometimes the greatest act of faith is to simply get up and say, “Here I am.”

Questions for Reflection:

· What area of life is generating the most anxiety for you now?

· What is one way that you can say to God, “Here I am, I’m ready to follow wherever you lead” in this area?

About this Plan

Scared Of The Unknown

The uncertainty of what’s next gives us plenty of room for anxiety to take root. After all, we should be afraid of what we can’t control, right? But Paul tells us we have another option—one that replaces our fear with a “peace beyond understanding.”
