God’s Blueprint for Your Home a 6-Day Devotion by Sue AfutuSample
The Posture Of A Steward
I have heard some Christian employers in my country say that they don’t like recruiting fellow believers because some tend to be lazy and take undue advantage of the fact that they belong to the household of faith along with them. Now, this is sad. The situation is compounded when you engage workers in a domestic setting. This is because lines of authority tend to be blurred in such environments as opposed to more formal workspaces.
In our homes, bondservants can be likened to a driver, cook, cleaner or nanny. In today’s devotional, we will discuss the Biblical requirement of godly servants to their earthly masters.
God requires that stewards will be obedient to their masters and mistresses (employers) and that, they will do that sincerely not merely to please their employers, but out of reverence for God. They are also to do so, not only when their masters are around, but also in their absence.
Again, this verse encourages them to serve wholeheartedly as to the Lord and not to men, because they will be rewarded for their work (verses 23 -24). The passage dissuades them from doing wrong as they will similarly be repaid for that since there is no partiality with God (verse 25).
Ephesians 6:5-8 gives similar rules to stewards as discussed above. It is notable that we are constantly reminded whether as wives, children or stewards that our act of obedience to the other party is actually towards God. This should not surprise us because our heavenly Father is the architect of this pyramid and sits at the very top of it.
Reflection:
In what ways can I give better service to my employer?
Prayer:
Lord, help me to be a faithful employee in Jesus’ name. Amen.
