5 Days to a New Reality of Trust, Connection, and Authenticity With God

DAY 3 OF 5

Communion

Isn’t it interesting how we can spend a lot of time around people without getting to know them? We can sit next to a stranger on a plane for five hours and never make eye contact. We can live next to our neighbor for 20 years and never speak.

This same dynamic can be present in our relationship with God. Even though we believe He is present everywhere at all times, we can feel distant from Him. Sure, we can study the Word and memorize verses. But the invitation is to something much more personal than that. After all, we’re called to know God – not merely to know about Him.

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15

I feel a deep desire to have a friendship with God. “Communion” is a song from my album “A New Reality.” More than a song, it’s prayer asking to know Jesus intimately.

According to Merriam-Webster, communion means “the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings.” It shares the same root as other words like community and communication.

This is not a one-time decision. We invest in our community on a regular basis; that is how we keep it alive and thriving. The same is true with Jesus. I have to choose daily to welcome Him into my life. He is always calling, always knocking, but it is up to me to keep answering.

You don’t study your way into holiness. It’s not an intellectual exercise. It’s a relationship.

One incredible aspect of this friendship with Jesus is that we can’t reach the end of His goodness, or exhaust His kindness. In the bridge of the song “Communion,” I reflect on it this way:

I’ll never get to the end. I’ll never reach to the depths. With you, there’s always more.

RESPOND

How have you seen God continue to reveal Himself to you over the course of your relationship? Today, try to open your eyes and ears to experience God in a new way. Look for a new depth to His character that you hadn’t noticed before. Let Him surprise you.
