Wave of Truth

DAY 4 OF 5

Your Wave

It’s a solid day, but there is an expected order you are subject to as you sit and wait.

“Your wave” comes the call in the line-up. It’s your turn. You have put in the time, you’ve trained, you have the right board, and you have done this with your coach before, but now you’re on your own.

A million thoughts - do I trust the call? Is it just the right time, and am I going to make it?

You can succumb to the doubt in other’s eyes. You can falter at the negative forces as others paddle wide, and the noise of the thundering waves pitching on the reef fills your ears. Or you can trust, dig deep, and own what the man has called you into, taking the legacy and inheriting the stories that come with feeling the freedom and exhilaration of riding the wave of the day.

One of the most powerful tools in owning a call-in like this is breath control. It helps manage and channel anxiety while controlling fear. Many big-wave surfers do breath control training in preparation for the call of a big day.

The most dynamic use of breath control is singing, and in the book of Zephaniah chapter 3 verse 7, a beautiful verse expounds this to a whole new level of God’s breath over us individually.

The Lord your God is in your midst,
The Mighty One will give you victory;
He will rejoice over you with gladness,
He will quiet you with His love,
He rejoices over you with singing.”

What an amazing thing to imagine and know. God has a song and a call for your life that has never changed. Jeremiah 1: 4-5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you”.

As an expectant mother sits, rocks, hums, and sings to her unborn child, they may know her voice, so it is with God. With his divine breath, he has sung a song over your life and set a call in your heart since before you were born. That song, that call, has never changed; it is your life song.

But do you know it, or do the noise and distractions around us drown it out so that you no longer clearly hear God’s call?

If we let it, the noise of the day competes for attention, drowns out everything else, and can cause us to doubt, robbing us of our inheritance and joy. We pull back from the call, “Your wave."

Reflection

What could be causing you to pull back?

  1. Could it be the chaos of noise around us and that what we are most familiar with is the loudest to us?
  • What is the Loudest Voice in your life at this time?

[Is it self-doubt, or fear of others’ opinions, or is it the word of God?]

“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I consecrated you” (Jeremiah 1: 4-5)

  1. Think. Something noisy or distracting doesn’t have to be loud, it just has to get your attention.
  • What most gets your attention and why?

[Is it the craziness of life around you or the presence of God in the midst of it?]

“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share together as friends.” (Revelation‬ 3‬:20‬)

  1. Become familiar with the word of God and trust the call.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

(Proverbs‬ 3‬: 5‬-6‬)
