Godly Masculinity - Wisdom for Young MenSample
Introduction
The going theme of today's life is to "just enjoy it and have fun." This stands in stark contrast to the life we are called to, a life of growth, purpose and meaning.
Chasing after pleasure
The definition of hedonism:
- the pursuit of pleasure; sensual self-indulgence
Nothing weakens a godly man more than one that pursues pleasure.
1 Tim. 5:6. This is one of the verses in the Bible that is addressed to women but is also applicable to men. There is a continued battle between our flesh and our spirit.
Chasing after pleasure strips a man of the critical element of discipline and self-control. It can take many forms:
- Watching bad videos on the internet or even just wasting time scrolling through endless memes.
- Drinking too much alcohol or using drugs
- Gambling
- Masturbation – seeking pleasure
All the above and more will impact your relationship with God.
It is not that God does not want us to enjoy life. This is clear from Ecc. 11.9. It is also clear that God will keep us responsible for what we have done with this life.
In 2 Tim 1:7 God has given us the antidote for this temptation: self-control.
Let us not keep chasing after pleasure but live a life full of joy but with self-control.
What does it mean?
- Instead of chasing worldly pleasure, which leaves you empty, chase after purpose.
- Understand that the boundaries set by God are not there to steal our enjoyment but are there to protect us and the life of abundance that God has planned for us.
