A Father's Path

DAY 7 OF 7

A Father’s Blessing

In Matthew 3:17, God the Father speaks words of blessing over His Son, Jesus.

This blessing is said out loud, declares the affection God has for Jesus, and affirms God’s pleasure in His Son.

The interesting reality is that Jesus had not started His earthly ministry yet. God loves Jesus purely for who He is, not for what He has done.

A father's blessing over his children is perhaps one of the most important gifts you can give them.

A father’s blessing should include:

  • a declaration of the depth of your love for them;
  • a proclamation of the strengths you believe they have as they seek to make their mark on the world;
  • the desires of your heart for their walk with God and their future.

When a father blesses his children, he is helping them to know that he believes in them–not because of their performance, but because of who they are.

Something unique happens in a child's heart when they hear their father's blessing. Sons need to know that their dad believes they have what it takes to be a man, and daughters need to know that their dad thinks every part of who they are is beautiful.

When a dad blesses his children in these ways, he is reflecting the heart of God the Father to his children, and he will give his children a healthy, God-honouring confidence as they go through life.

I have learned that the best way to bless your children is for there to be at least one formal moment in life where your children hear these words from you.

Bless your children, and watch them soar.

Prayer: Father, thank You for blessing me! Help me to bless my children with words and actions that will help them grow into what You have created them for. Amen.

Reflection: Have you ever blessed your kids in this intentional way? If so, what was the experience like? If not, what would it take to do so?
