The Wellness Revelation 21-Day Journey

DAY 5 OF 21

Be Free

HUNGER, IDOLS, & FREEDOM

Now that we’ve framed our health journey through the lens of God’s purpose, desire, and design, let’s talk about food and freedom.

What is it about food that always keeps us coming back for more? Well, of course… we need more because we need food to live. However, biological needs may not be the only reason we return to food.

Part of the unique design of the human body is its need for food and its ability to enjoy food. That itself is a gift. God designed us so that we could eat and chew food (with our mouths and teeth), taste food (through our taste buds), break down food (using saliva, enzymes, and bile), and absorb and distribute food nutrients (through the stomach and small and large intestines).

It is all part of a deliberate and complete design. We are even told to pray for our “daily bread” (Matthew 6:11), whether it is physical or spiritual. Food sustains our physical life, just as the Word of God sustains our spiritual life.

Somewhere between Creation and now, our approach to food has gone seriously wrong. We have taken food and placed it in its own shrine.

When food – or anything, for that matter – is given the highest value in your life, it no longer serves you. You serve that which you give the highest value. If food is the first priority in your life, it is actually malnourishing you and subtracting from your health while adding to your personal poverty.

Reflect:

What is given the highest value in my life? Have I given food the first priority in my life?
