NT24 FastSample
Day 7 by Haleigh Kellam, Publishing Assistant of UPPERROOM
Today’s Reading: John 11-21
“...After He had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me." His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means. Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.” (John 13:21-26)
Just moments before Jesus is led into the most excruciating hours of His life, we find in this portion of scripture a profound invitation that offends the carnal way of thinking and causes His closest friends to question Him.
Picture this: Jesus has gathered with His twelve disciples to administer His body and blood. This would be known as the Last Supper, the final intimate gathering before His crucifixion. Right after Jesus serves the cup of remembrance, He ends by saying, “The one who will betray me is at the table with us.”
I can only imagine the way that must have felt. These men have just received the body of Jesus given to them, and the blood of Jesus poured out for them. It was not before the meal, but after that Jesus acknowledges His betrayer is seated at the table. What a beautiful message we can meditate on in this passage! Jesus Christ, the Perfect One, gave Himself and the omission of sin to His enemy. Jesus shows us to administer forgiveness.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, thank you for revealing Jesus to me in this scripture. As I choose this day to sit at Your table and receive all that You are in Your body and blood, I pray that You would put Your finger on any form of bitterness or unforgiveness I might be carrying. Help me “feed my betrayer” just as You have shown me to, Lord. Thank you for being a good Helper in my time of need. Amen.
