Eight Responses to Meeting JesusSample
Wise men from the east came to search for Jesus
“Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’” (Matthew 2:1-2)
The news of Jesus' birth was announced by an angel to a group of shepherds, as we read a few days ago. But the same news was also read in the stars by a group of “wise men from the east.” It is possible that they interpreted the appearance of a special star using ancient prophecies, for example of Bileam (see Numbers 24:15-17). Either way, their conclusion that a Jewish king had been born was reason enough for them to go on a journey. Their interest was kindled. They wanted to meet and worship this king themselves.
We do not know exactly where these wise men lived, but their journey from “the east” must have been quite an undertaking. They went to great lengths to find Jesus! How is that with you? Has the information you have heard or read about the Lord Jesus also caught your attention? Are you making an effort to know Him better and learn more about Him so that you can worship Him?
The wise men found Jesus. Their search was rewarded. Jesus promises that you too can find Him: “For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:8). Such a search is well worth the effort!
