My Life Verse

DAY 5 OF 5

What Scripture Would I Want Quoted at My Funeral?

Not many of us like to think about this, but one day our lives will come to an end. Our friends, families, and loved ones will come together to lay us to rest. At our funerals, there will likely be a eulogy and a sharing of words to recognize the lives we’ve lived. What will those words be? What will people say when they sit around to talk about your life? When they come together to grieve and remember you, what will they remember? What will come to mind?

It’s a sobering thought. It leads us to our final question to find our life verse: What scripture would I want quoted at my funeral?

What scripture would the minister share at your funeral that would make your friends and family think, “That's the perfect verse to describe their life”?

You see, having a life verse isn’t just about having a verse to hold to while you’re living, it’s also about the legacy you leave behind when you die. Psalm 78 talks about generations after generations knowing the Lord. That only happens when there is a legacy of faith to be handed down from grandparents to grandchildren, parents to children, spiritual parents to young people they disciple, and so on. Your life verse can and should outlive you. What do you want it to be?

As we come to the close of this 5-day exploration of life verses, let’s recap the questions we’ve asked ourselves:

  1. What encouragement do I need right now?
  2. What verse encourages my passion for Christ?
  3. What verse do I want to see lived out in my life?
  4. What verse would I like quoted at my funeral?

The hope is that you’ve found your life verse or been encouraged to do so in the future. Wherever you are today, know that God is always speaking. His Word is alive and available to you today and every day!

Thought of the Day: The hard reality that my time on Earth will come to an end can help me consider the legacy I want to leave behind. Having a life verse that outlives me can be a powerful way to leave a spiritual legacy when I’m gone.
