Holy Spirit: From Creation to Companion Sample
Very quickly into my research in the Bible about the Holy Spirit, I learned some surprising facts that changed my perspective of who He is.
The first thing I discovered was that He is not an "it." It is possible that His other name, "Holy Ghost", makes us think of a wafting, nebulous being. But that's not true of Him. He is a person of the Trinity.
He is the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. Acknowledging this is the start of understanding the personhood of the Holy Spirit.
The Apostle Paul put it this way: the spirit of a man is the only one who truly knows the man, so it is with the Spirit of God. He is the only One who knows the thoughts of God.
The second thing I found out about the Holy Spirit is that He was at the Creation!
Many might be familiar with the first chapter of the gospel of John, which tells us Jesus was with God at the Creation. John said that all things came to be through Jesus.
But right at the very beginning of the Bible, we see that the Spirit of God was there as well!
Genesis 1:2 says, "The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters."
God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. The whole Trinity was at Creation!
The Holy Spirit was also present in the creative process of the building of the Tabernacle, as God filled specific people with His Spirit to work on the interior design of the Tabernacle. Moses declared that Bezalel and Oholiab had been filled with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship to do the work inside the Tabernacle. God also put in their hearts to teach what they knew.
Not only were these creatives filled with the necessary skills to design the Tabernacle, but also with some gifts of the Spirit found in the New Testament: wisdom, knowledge, and teaching.
Prayer:
Lord, please teach me about Your Spirit. If there are things I learn as I go through this plan that make me uncomfortable because they are not what I have believed or was taught, please bring clarity to my thinking based on Your Word. Please teach me to think of the Holy Spirit as “He”. Would You give me a sense of wonder at the mystery of the Holy Spirit, who inspires creativity, wisdom, knowledge, and teaching? Help me to think of the Holy Spirit in the ways You want me to think of Him. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
