Day 2 – The Miracle Of Rest

Where can we find miracles in our daily lives?

Red Rocks Worship’s song, “Miracle In Me,” has a line that says, “Your work was finished at Calvary. Your body broken, so mine is complete.” It’s a stunning declaration of God’s kindness and power. We are children of a God that doesn’t sit idly by - instead, He came to earth, taking our sins on as His own so that He could die as the perfect sacrifice.

Yes, this is the miracle of salvation. Yes, this is the miracle of relationship with God. But do you know what else this reveals?

The miracle of rest. The miracle of putting down our achievements. The miracle of surrendering to God’s ability to save us better than we can save ourselves.

Hebrews talks about such a rest, “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works…” (Hebrews 4:9-10). As people in a post-modern society, it’s hard to fathom us resting from work. After all, Gettysburg College reports that around 1/3 of a person’s life is spent working. And if 1/3 is working - it’s hardly true that the other 2/3 are full of rest. Instead, they are probably full of family responsibilities, serving, exercising, planning, etc. Then - maybe if you’re lucky, you get to sleep. And even then, is it restful? Or do you toss and turn at night, waiting for the next day's stress to begin?

Naturally - we, as humans, are not good at resting. Yet, Hebrews tells us that there is a Sabbath rest for us—a place where we can fully refrain from work in our lives and just be still.

What a miracle that is! For us to truly rest in the promise that the work is finished. We do not have to strive because Christ strived for us. We don’t have to earn His love, for He freely gives it to us. And we don’t have to wait for a miracle to be revealed. God’s work for us WAS a miracle. It IS a miracle. Our ability to rest and know that we don’t have to try to earn salvation WILL continually be a miracle.

Philippians 1:6 tells us, “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ,” and what a powerful declaration that is. It is our Father who began a good work in us - and it is He who will bring it to completion.

You can leave your perfection at the foot of the cross. You can leave your exhaustion at the foot of the cross. You can leave the creeping thought that you’ll never measure up at the foot of the cross. He has performed a miracle - and it’s one that means you can rest. Rest assured that He has you in the palm of His hand.
