The Daily Grind of the SeasonNäide

Be Still
Basketball officials generally referee from November to March, which means we do the majority of our training during the summer like ants, which teach us about preparation. Preparation is never wasted time, especially in God’s word. Badgers teach us about wise building and posturing ourselves to acknowledge our weaknesses. We can learn about cooperation and order from locusts. Last but not least, lizards can teach us about fearlessness. Nothing will test our faith like success. In order to advance, we have to let some things go. As the season begins, the excitement begins and our off-season routine shifts to an in-season routine. This is difficult for me because my daily devotional routine gets disrupted due to travel. That’s the excuse I give myself anyway. So like we say in the officiating world when things start to go sideways, get back to the fundamentals. Start by being still in His presence for 5 minutes a day. Prepare yourself, acknowledge your weakness, don’t gloat in your success and don’t forget to let some things go. Practice an in-season routine during the off-season and if you’re already in-season, you can start right now.
What are you doing to prepare to spend time in the word with God for your upcoming season or the current season you’re in?
Kobe Bryant once said, “I never negotiate with myself.” What are you negotiating with yourself that is costing you time with God?

About this Plan

Being a Christian can be similar to being a sports official. Striving for perfection but coming up short. Trust the system. Trust the process. Trust your gut, trust your training. Sound familiar? How many of us hear that or self-talk those reminders during our game. All of these are great reminders and processes to becoming a successful official. But we need to remember, it’s the Holy Spirit we should be listening to in those locker rooms, car rides, dinners and hotel rooms.
