Three Lessons in Rest
Have you ever tried to rest only to feel like there’s something else you should be doing? Maybe you’ve tried to make room for weekly sabbath time, but items on your to-do list won’t stop scrolling through your mind. If this is you, you’re not alone.
We live in a culture where rest is often frowned upon. However, can you think of anyone who’s had a bigger impact on the world than Jesus? Probably not; at least, I sure can’t.
When we look at Jesus’ three-year ministry, we see some surprising moments when He took time to rest. In today’s guiding verse, we learn Jesus made a habit of unplugging from the demands of life to be alone, recharge, and pray.
In fact, what Jesus did was counterintuitive to us: He often stepped away when He was in the highest demand. Thousands of needy people chased His healing touch. They wanted to hear His revolutionary teaching. Still, Jesus withdrew, and in doing so, teaches us so much!
First, Jesus was a man who needed rest. Even though He was God, He was also fully human while on earth. This meant He experienced the very same physical, mental, and spiritual needs we do.
Second, Jesus wanted to hear from God. He was constantly surrounded by thousands who made their demands on His time. But Jesus wanted to clearly hear the Father’s agenda, so He stepped outside of the noise and entered into solitude.
While recent studies show more than 60 percent of Americans feel increasingly lonely, left out, and misunderstood—Jesus shows us solitude does not equal isolation. It is a powerful habit to deepen our relationship with God.
Third, Jesus gives us permission to rest. If you struggle with feelings of guilt when resting, just remember Jesus! No one in history accomplished as much as He did in a lifetime, much less three years.
If Jesus found it necessary, helpful, and good to rest, we should, too.
As you engage with God’s Word:
● What are the most prevalent deterrents, demands, and distractions that keep me from truly resting?
● What is God saying to me?
● How can I apply what God is teaching me?
● How can I be specific in prayer today?
