Pursuing Peace

DAY 4 OF 7

At Peace with Ourselves

Often the greatest battle for peace is the one that happens inside of us. There is a story of a grandfather who told his grandson, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is vengeful, angry, and violent. The other wolf is loving and compassionate. The grandson asked him, "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?" The grandfather answered, "The one I feed."

We choose what to feed our souls. What kind of thoughts do you have about yourself? Our thought-life we must face daily and we must be careful about how we will deal with our worries. Scripture encourages us to find peace in ourselves by placing our worries with God and letting him guard our hearts and minds, even when it surpasses our understanding.

African proverbs:

The skin of the leopard is beautiful, but not his heart. ~ Baluba proverb

There is a challenging article on Tearfund’s Rhythms site which is worth a read, asking if our identity has become closely tied with the clothes we wear.

Action:

We often find identity in our goods and possessions. Go to your favorite clothing store, not to buy anything but just to walk down the aisles while taking the opportunity to reflect on your needs. Offer a prayer of praise because God clothes you with His righteousness. Ask Him to meet you in that moment and leave the shop empty handed, knowing that you went in search of something only God can bring.
