And When They Heard — A Christmas Devotional

DAY 4 OF 5

The Priority of the Shepherds

The shepherds that we read about were all too familiar with the sights, smells, and sounds of the field. Like any other night, they were diligently watching the sheep, as they had been charged to do by their master. They had commitments and a routine, which was their top priority.

Of course, that night did not remain ordinary. We can only imagine the shock the shepherds experienced when their routine was interrupted by a bright light and angels heralding the long-awaited Messiah! But after the angels returned to heaven, we read that the shepherds’ response was not doubt or hesitation, but faith and anticipation. At that point, they could have easily said to each other, “what fantastic news! Let us go and see this child once our shift is finished.” Instead, they leave with haste after the angels depart. Their top priority shifted from the task at hand to witnessing the arrival of their new born king.

As I reflect on the world today, I can’t help but wonder if we would have the same faith required to respond in the way the shepherds did, even if we also received a visit from a company of angels. Though we may mean well, it seems as though we easily get caught up in the busyness of life, prioritizing everything except the one whom we are to live for. This especially rings true during Christmas. If I am honest with myself, the pressure of earthly responsibilities would have weighed very heavily on me if I were in the same position as the shepherds, so much so that I might have waited to seek what the angels spoke of.

I pray that you would recognize the value of Christ this advent and prioritize time with Him over everything else, even if that means sacrificing other commitments we see as important, just as the shepherds did. Let us consider what we can say no to in life in order to say yes to a passionate pursuit of Jesus this Christmas!

Reflect:

  1. Consider your average Christmas season. What are some things that you tend to prioritize that may take precious time away from your relationship with the Lord?
  2. What would you be willing to sacrifice if it meant putting the focus back on Jesus this Christmas?
  3. When was the last time you were able to drop everything in order to act on an opportunity to worship Jesus?

About this Plan

And When They Heard — A Christmas Devotional

The first coming of Jesus Christ produced many different responses from those who heard the news. In this devotional, we will reflect on the five reactions of those who were the first to hear of the arrival of the Messiah and prepare our hearts as we celebrate and remember the first coming of our Lord and Saviour.
