Overcoming Uncertainty: God’s Proven Promises

You hear my questions.

You have answers to all my uncertainty…

Let’s be honest; God doesn’t always tell us the whole plan. He reveals what we need to know and can handle at specific points in our journey. Take Abraham—God told Abraham that his seed would be innumerable, but Abraham was very old with no children and a barren wife. (Genesis 13:16).

Then, after Abraham tried to help God’s plan move forward by having Ishmael with Sarah’s servant, Hagar, God told Abraham that he and Sarah would have a son by that same time next year, but they would have to trust that nothing was too hard for God (Genesis 18:10-14). Isaac was born to a barren mom and a geriatric father. God kept His promise.

Then, God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. How would Abraham’s seed outnumber the dust of the earth if his only son was sacrificed? Abraham did not hold God’s gift, Isaac, in higher esteem than the giver of the gift, God. Abraham, by faith, was willing to make the sacrifice. As a result of Abraham’s faith and willingness to trust in God, God restated His promise to bless Abraham and his descendants in the face of uncertainty. (Genesis 22:1-3; 15-18).

Abraham isn’t the only example. Throughout the Bible, God makes promises to His children that require great faith: Joseph (Jacob’s favorite son), Moses, David, Mary, and the twelve disciples. If we knew all of the answers, we would not have to have faith in God. If we knew of the obstacles we would have to overcome to reach God’s purpose for our lives, we might choose a less challenging path, but then we would miss out on God’s amazing blessings. We must believe what Scripture says:

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to him for protection. Psalms 18:30 NLT

His way is still perfect even when we’re uncertain because God will always fulfill His promises. When we have questions, we can go to Him. I’m not sure where the narrative began that one cannot ask God questions, especially the question “why,” but God wants to hear from His children, especially when we are confused and need direction. As long as we ask our questions from a place of reverence, we can feel free to take our anxieties about uncertainties to God.

God sees the big picture when we only see glimpses of glory. God knows us inside and out. He knows our fears and flaws. He will patiently, graciously, and mercifully guide us to and through the life He has for us. When we accept that God’s path is best, acknowledge that His plans are perfect, and activate our faith in His promises that always prove to be true, we can overcome anything!
