Paul wrote 2 Corinthians because he was distressed over the anger and criticism that followed his recent visit to Corinth. Paul was slandered in Corinth for his preaching and had fled Ephesus in fear of his life. This letter was written after his difficult visits to those cities. Paul escaped to the region of Macedonia, and 2 Corinthians was written during that time. This letter reflects a low period in his personal life and ministry. The Corinthians had expected Paul to return to their city, but he sent this letter instead. Paul wanted to return to Corinth but also wanted them to heal and mature in their faith before he did.
“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:17).
