Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” —John 11:41–42
John 11:41–42 has always been one of my favorite passages of Scripture. Jesus is about to raise Lazarus from the dead, and He lifts His eyes to heaven, opens His mouth, and begins to speak loudly enough for all the people around Him to hear. And this is what He says: “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.”
There’s something foundational about praying out loud. There is power in believing God’s Word in our hearts and then speaking it out of our mouths. This kind of prayer is dynamic and fundamental to walking with God. When we pray out loud, we are not only verbalizing our faith but we are also using our mouths and vocal cords to stand in agreement with God. But there is another side to praying out loud, and that is knowing that God also hears even the subtlest whisper of our hearts. He knows every thought of our minds.
He hears you always. He hears the faintest cry of your soul. He knows every thought in your mind because He’s closer to you than you are to yourself.
The apostle Paul tells us that the word of faith “is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (Rom. 10:8). It is not so far away that we can’t reach it. Neither is God so far removed that we can’t find Him. His Word is in our mouths and in our hearts.
