Undivided: Finding Wholeness in Christ When Life Is Pulling You ApartSample

Undivided: Finding Wholeness in Christ When Life Is Pulling You Apart

DAY 5 OF 5

Am I as Close to God as I Want to be?

In 1999, I married the love of my life. I had no doubts that we would function as one, and I thought I knew what that would look like. I didn’t. A few years after our wedding, God led my husband to move our family an hour and a half away from my hometown. You would have thought he was moving us to Jupiter. I pouted. I complained. I rebelled.

I realized how much my covenant with John affected every area of my life. The thought of our union was beautiful but living out the union wasn’t as simple as the picture I envisioned. I thought that there would be no disagreements, and there certainly wouldn’t be anything asked of me that I didn’t want to do. When I said “forsaking all others,” I meant it, but I did not think there would be things I would need to forsake—moving meant forsaking my comforts - routines, relationships, and roles that I had grown accustomed to.

I wasn’t focused on my husband or the beautiful relationship we had. I was not considering his motives of creating a better life, offering more opportunities, and providing for our family. I forgot that he loved us and wanted the best for us.

We often act the same with God. We forget that He loves us, has an excellent plan for us, and always gives us better than we have. We hold onto our comforts more than the Comforter, so we have a hard time moving forward when He says go.

One of the most profound steps in uniting our hearts isn’t removing all the things that pull our hearts apart. It’s drawing close to the One who holds it together, embracing Him so that we can be secure in His love. It’s focusing on Him more than all else.

Friend, God loves us and wants to spend time with us. He wants to heal our fragmented hearts and bring peace to our frantic lives. He wants us undivided.

Can I encourage you today to return being in His presence to a place of priority in your life?

Reflection:

What steps can you take to prioritize your time with God?

Is there something He is leading you to forsake? How can you cling to Him instead of those things?
