Is it worth it?

Moses grew up as a leader and accomplished great things in the land of Egypt, but he was too self-absorbed to be of much use to God. After being broken, and at the age of 80, he was a different man. Psalm 103:7 said that God showed his ways to Moses, but only his deeds to the people of Israel. Exodus 33:11 says God spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Abraham became a friend of God (2 Chronicles 20:7). Jacob testified that he has seen God face to face (Genesis 32:30). David became the apple of God’s eye (Psalm 17:8).

Christ-followers become more peaceful and calm during the raging storms of life. They may not be the most astute doctrinally or theologically, but they are exposed to God’s heart. They experience the peace of God that passes all understanding. Broken Christians are relaxing to be around. They easily humble themselves before others. They are teachable, and never arrogant. They are more sensitive to the needs of others. They don’t feel a need to defend themselves before others. They are more meek – not weak, but their obvious power from God is under control.

Numbers 12:3, “(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)” After Moses was broken, he oversaw the ten plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the water from the rock, the manna, the miracle of the quail, the Ten Commandments, and on and on.

The broken are quick to forgive, as Joseph demonstrated so beautifully to his brothers in Genesis 45:5, “And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.” God’s power pulsates through them. Isaiah wrote the greatest prophecy ever written after he was broken by the overwhelming vision of God; Isaiah 6:5, “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!...” Paul became the greatest missionary the world has ever known and wrote most of the New Testament. Fanny Crosby became the most prolific hymn writer in American history, after being blinded by a quack doctor.

We often think we are free when we are living for ourselves, but that is a satanic illusion. We are a slave to sin and selfishness. But Jesus gives us an opportunity to exchange our yoke of slavery in sin and fear – for His yoke of rest and salvation. And under His yoke, we are finally free! Broken Christians love resting in Jesus and ministering under His yoke. They have abandoned their own strength and their own ways, and they never look for recognition from people.

Do you want to experience God in and through your life, more than you want comfort and security? The pleasures of sin are temporary and always end in heartbreak. Doesn’t it seem like the wisest choice to be broken by God, with an outcome of joy, peace, and adventure forever; rather than being broken by sin, with an ending in everlasting loneliness and torment?

Matthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
