MEETING 4: EVERY DAY
WELCOME
BLINDFOLD FETCH
Take whatever small objects you have on hand (i.e., money, pack of gum, hair ties, shoes, etc.) and spread them out on the ground in a space covering a few square feet.
Pick someone from the group (the fetcher) and have them stand in front of the area where the objects have been placed. Blindfold them or have them close their eyes tightly. No peeking allowed! Instruct the person to walk through the space, locate a specific item and bend down to fetch it. Give the person a limited time to complete this task.
Have the person try again, but this time, pick someone from the group (the director) to stand nearby and give them vocal cues to help them find and retrieve the object.
Repeat the exercise with different participants as time allows.
Q: To the fetchers, what was the most difficult part of this game? How did having a director help you?
Q: To the whole group, have you ever experienced a time as a competitor when you felt like you were trying to achieve a difficult task without any help? Explain.
WARM-UP
TEAM EFFORT
Just like in Blindfold Fetch, there is a clear contrast between trying to accomplish a goal on your own versus having solid, consistent support.
A successful competitor is defined by the people around them. You need coaches, teammates, trainers, parents, administrators, and sometimes an entire community to help provide the proper equipment and training along with the opportunity to compete.
Q: Who are the people who help you succeed as a competitor? What would happen if you didn’t have those people in your life?
Q: What equipment and training is vital to your success as a competitor? What would happen if that training and equipment weren’t available to you?
