The Struggle for Peace
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 ESV
Ultimately the answer to why cultivating peace in our homes is so difficult is found in the Garden of Eden. Because of the sin that entered the world, there is no longer perfection to be found on earth. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t burn the bread, yell at the kids, or be angry at our husbands. But the world we live in is fallen, and we are too. In John, Jesus warned us to be aware of our own failure to be truthful and honest. This sinfulness will harm our relationship with each other.
Added to this sin problem is the fact that the Father of all Lies, the devil, is also at work! I Peter 5:8 warns “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
Marriages are under attack. Godly marriages are even more so. A towering divorce rate is evidence that the enemy's attacks work. The devil seeks to destroy each one of us and our families, especially if we desire to do God’s will and complete His purpose for us on this earth. If the devil can wreck our peace, he can insert conflict.
Small doses of these things will regularly destroy, not fortify. Commit your marriage to the Lord and ask Him to protect and intervene!
Dear Lord, I thank you that You are all-powerful. I pray that You will lead and direct us and help us to protect our marriage from the attacks that are to come.
