What Is God's View on Marriage?

DAY 5 OF 10

Being married or single does not affect your relationship with God

Reading so much about marriage may give you the impression that being married is the ultimate life goal of every Christian. But it is not.

Jesus Himself, who was the only sinless and perfect human, was not married. The apostle Paul, who was extraordinarily fruitful as a missionary, was not married either. And he did not consider this a loss, but a blessing. For, he says, being single allowed him to fully focus on “the things of the Lord” instead of “worldly things” such as pleasing his wife or providing for his family.

For Christians, there are two honorable options: remaining single or entering a life-long relationship between one man and one woman. Proverbs 18:22 states, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the LORD.” 1 Corinthians 7:38 says, “he who refrains from marriage will do even better”. So, both singleness and marriage can be a gift of grace. “Each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another” (1 Corinthians 7:7). The only general rule is this: “Let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him” (1 Corinthians 7:17).

Are you single or married? Do you consider your ‘marital status’ as a gift from God?

About this Plan

What Is God's View on Marriage?

People have different views on marriage. Some find it extraordinarily old-fashioned, others find it extremely romantic, and others are hurt by their spouse’s infidelity or their parents’ divorce. But above all these opinions or experiences is God’s Word which has a lot to say about marriage. Discover in this reading plan what God’s view on marriage is.
